白い翼を持つ鳩の様に
彼女が歌うように歌うの

fleetwood macのヴォーカルだったStevie Nicksが1981年に発表したソロアルバム
「Bella Donna」収録曲。リフの"白い翼を持つ鳩の様に"というフレーズが印象的な
ロックチューン。歌詞は抽象的で難解でありながら、シンプルなコード進行。これは
fleetwood macのときからStevie Nicksの作る曲の特徴です。
タイトルの"edge of seventeen"については有名なエピソードがあります。友人が
「At the age of seventeen」と言ったのを、Stevieが「edge of seventeen」と聞き
違えたことをきっかけに生まれたと言われており、元々の意味は無いのかもしれません。
the edge ofは～の端という意味ですが、～の寸前やぎりぎりという意味もあります。
（例えば映画『ブリジットジョーンズの日記 きれそうなわたしの12か月』の原題は
『Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason』ですが、直訳すると理性のぎりぎりという
意味になります。）
曲中では、これに加えて大人とこどもの境界という意味も持たせていると考えます。
余談ですが、女優でありシンガーとしても人気上昇中のHailee Steinfeld主演の青春
映画『The edge of seventeen』が昨年アメリカで公開されています。これは間違いなく
Stevie Nicksの曲名から付けれれたタイトルでしょう。元々聞き違えから生まれた曲名
から、さらに映画が生まれる…言葉って面白いなぁと思います。
映画『The edge of seventeen』は2017年4月に日本公開の予定だそうです。邦題はどう
なるのでしょうか？公開されたらぜひ見に行きたいと思っています。

映画『The edge of seventeen』は、『スウィート17モンスター』という邦題で4月22日
から全国公開となりました。まさか邦題を英語にするとは…。少し残念ですが、映画は
見に行くつもりです。
